I understand

Lauren, Surfachem's Key Account Manager, recently visited a careers event at Maltings Academy in Witham, her local comprehensive school. The aim of the day was to help secondary school students discover science based careers.

Lauren took a lot of samples, and explained to the children how science affects our everyday lives and and how it's present in products we all use everyday including shampoos, hair products, and cosmetics. They were able to distinguish the difference between essential oils, and recognise scents such as Cinnamon oil, Lime oil and Sweet Orange oil.

They also tried some of Lubrizol's sweet escape samples, and were able to give examples of all the products they frequently use and why the feel and texture of those products are important to them. They were also hands on with various waxes including tea wax, beeswax, natural alternatives to pet jelly and suspended scrubs.

Lauren's stand was one of the most popular at the event, and the school is considering more "applied science" workshops to encourage children to learn. It gave her great pleasure to see the kids who thought she was a "girls make up stand" at first glance, but then realised that it was all about reactions, chemistry and creation.

STEM at Surfachem

In 2016, the 2M Group, Surfachem's parent company, helped over 550 young people access careers in STEM Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects in the UK, as part of its ‘2M – STEM’ programme. The Group has just announced it will be continuing the programme in 2017 and has pledged to support even more young people this year, with special emphasis on graduates of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Life Sciences degrees.
