Three of Surfachem’s STEM ambassadors recently visited a careers event at Park Lane Secondary School in Halifax. The primary aim of the day was to help pupils understand what careers are available within science and to highlight the different routes into the chemical industry from attending university to completing a workplace apprenticeship.
Paul, Surfachem’s Technical Development Manager, brought in samples which he used to explain to the students how science affects our everyday lives and how it's present in products we all use every day including shampoos, hair care, cosmetics as well as household cleaning products.
In addition, Lee, Surfachem’s IT Systems Administrator and Chloe, Surfachem’s HR Executive, both spoke to students about their path’s into the industry and highlighted the diverse range of careers on offer, from customer facing roles to working in back office support functions.
Surfachem’s stand was very popular at the event, and the school is now considering similar activities including holding a Month of STEM related events to encourage children to learn about the wide range of professions on offer.
Surfachem, in conjunction with the 2M Group, Surfachem’s parent company, will continue to support and help young people access careers in Science, technology, Engineering and Maths as part of its ‘2M – STEM’ programme throughout 2017, with special emphasis on graduates of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Life Sciences degrees, #wedontallwearwhitecoats.
